Problems after warranty expired

Submitted by Mama GG - 5/28/2019

A month after the manufacture warranty expired I started having issues with ice buildup on the seal of the freezer. Then the fan from the freezer started to sound loud and not good. I don't know why I did but I took out the ice tray and it stopped. That was a temporary fix. Now I get ice build up and I constantly have to break the icicles on the freezer seal. The refrigerator is now 2 1/2 years old and the problem has gotten way worse. Currently I am attempting to clean it and have found water (pool of water) at the base of the middle door. I also noticed water at the bottom of the freezer too. I did not buy an extended warranty because it was so expensive for just 2 years. From what I have read from part reviews, this is a major problem. Also, it dings very easy. :(

I regret the purchase of this refrigerator

Submitted by Calvert - 5/20/2019

It looked nice in the showroom and some nice features. It seemed like the refrigerator for me until I purchased it and lived with it for a year. Aside from the pitiful icemaker, which produces about 4 cups of ice per day, the appliance functioned for a little over 12 months. in month 13 I began to notice that liquids were not as cool as they should be. The problem progressed to the point that food began to spoil. I called a local appliance repair firm. The problem was diagnosed ("frozen evaporator") and supposedly fixed. It wasn't. Additional service calls and many regular manual defrostings later I'm still drinking semi cool beverages and throwing away food. I have read other reviews on line and this appears to be a common problem. This Whirlpool is now 19 months old and I plan to replace the appliance with another brand. My purchase of a Whirlpool fridge turned out to be an expensive waste of money. I am fortunate to have a 17 year old fridge in my basement that was made by a different manufacturer. It allows me to keep things cold but heading to the basement every time I want a drink is inconvenient. That fridge still cools like the day it was put into service. The refrigerator that my spare replaced is still in use in a prior residence. I visit the current owners regularly and it still works great. It seems like the key to having a functioning and long lasting refrigerator is to NOT buy one manufactured by Whirlpool.

Nice Refrigerator, but...

Submitted by NateOR - 4/27/2019

Had this model for less than two years, however last few months we have been dealing with multiple attempted repairs involving ice build up under fridge, which ultimately is leading to water on our floor under the fridge. Unfortunately a solid fridge with a major flaw. Other than this, I would give it at least 4 stars.

Do not purchase

Submitted by Sandy728 - 4/24/2019

I purchased this refrigerator on March 23, 2015. Because it was not sealed properly by the manufacturer, it no longer works. We have paid to have two seperate technicians come to our house to verify. I am currently on the phone with Whirlpool, waiting for a member of their Care Resolution Escalated Team to come on the line. This is the third time I have been transfered. The ONLY thing I have heard thus far from Whirlpool is - "Sorry ma'am, since you didn't purchase the extended warranty there is nothing we can do. I can offer you a 1 year warranty on a new Whirlpool refrigerator." Care Resolution Escalated Team response - this is her exact response, "At this point Whirlpool will respectfully decline offering anything because of the age of the refrigerator." I asked to speak to someone over the Care Resolution Escalated Team. Currently on hold. Consumer Relations Manager just came on the line and here are some of the quotes from her: "Our company is not one you need to escalate until you get what you want. Your refrigerator is outside of warranty guidelines." "I will honor the 1 year warranty offered by the Care Resolution Escalated Team if you buy another Whirlpool product." "We ask you multiple times if you would like to buy an extended warranty." "There are outlet sites you can find online to get a discounted refrigerator." So basically what Whirlpool let me know is - too bad for me, buy another one of our products, and be sure to buy an extended warranty next time. Wow!

Poor design,poor product

Submitted by Sunnyb123 - 4/4/2019

I have had this refrigerator less than two years now. The first incident we had was we noticed the ice started melting 2 months ago. We clean up all the water and just turned the temp down. Now the entire freezer is not working and it started with the ice melting again. I read through the reviews and it appears that this is an issue with this model. Whirlpool is not will to accept that this is a flaw with this model as it has happened to other owners too! I have bought Whirlpool before as they made good solid products but sadly not anymore! Do NOT buy this refrigerator! Whirlpool has offered to pay for parts but not diagnostics or labor! This was an expensive refrigerator and it's not even two years old! I'm not willing to pay $800.00 for Freon as another customer had to do to fix his freezer issue. Looks like a good class action law suit might be the way to go! Very sad that Whirlpool is not standing by their products!

excellent refrigerator

Submitted by A1121 - 4/2/2019

I bought this refrigerators one year ago and we have never received a manual for it. At first, the refrigerator was very quiet and the compressor operated for very brief periods of time. Now it seems to be going on all the time and burn significant amounts of electricity. We still do not know what " fast cool" accomplishes. We have this option off now, yet the refrigerator's fan is always running.

The good, the bad ... and the HORRIBLE!

Submitted by JASGA - 3/28/2019

After exhaustive (and exhausting) research, I purchased this fridge in April 2016 for over $2,300 from Lowe's. I don't believe in extended warranties because a product should last, so I didn't buy one. In this case, that was a mistake ... more on that later. The good ... this is an extremely well organized and functional refrigerator. Obviously, much research and design effort has been put into designing for the typical family. It's my first bottom-freezer fridge and absolutely love the layout of that. We don't use much ice, so the small/slow ice maker that others note (while true) is not much of an issue for us. The bins are flexible and work well, and the digital controls throughout are intuitive. If it had continued to work as designed, it would be 5+ stars. The bad ... I don't think it's unique to this one, but the stainless dings very easily. Also, the water filters are ridiculously expensive ... like $60 each and replace every 6 months. Assuming a fridge lasts 10 years (which it should), you're in for over $1000 on filters!? The HORRIBLE ... a little after 2 years, we started to get constant defrosting, melting ice, water dripping out of the dispenser. Had a technician come look at it and he indicated it was leaking freon. Because this is a "sealed system", the cost to repair is over $800!?!? As you can imagine, I'm not at all pleased by that news! The technician was able to refill the freon and we got by for about another 6 months, but we're now at just shy of 3 years and the issue has recurred and won't hold freon at this time. So, I have a beautiful $2,500 (including filters and freon) device that's essentially trash unless I want to pay another $800 to fix it and hope it lasts more than 3 years this time. I've had many Whirlpool devices in my life and this is the first catastrophic failure I've had. So, I can't really blame it on the brand. I'd suggest that, perhaps, mine was a lemon if there weren't dozens of other reviews here with the exact same issue. That leads me to believe there's a functional flaw with the refrigeration unit of this particular device ... and that is something Whirlpool should address.

The ice maker is in the refrigerator door doesn't keep cool what was I thinking. And the IM is small. Learned an expensive lesson

No ice!!!

Submitted by Robin&Randy - 1/26/2019

We've had this Refrigerator for about 2 years. The ice maker has given us a few problems over the years, but we could always remedy the issue. Well, it has now stopped making ice entirely!! This is unacceptable! My 15 year old Fridgedair still works perfectly! Of course, this Whirlpool is out of warranty, so I'm stuck with a refrigerator that does not make ice. This appliance costs too much to have this many problems making ice.

Submitted by Thatjcb - 1/17/2019

We have owned this refrigerator for 3 years and have had continual problems with the icemaker-no ice, then working again, now it has completely stopped working. In addition, the shelves are cheaply made and broken. Pictures included. What good are nice features when whirlpool does not stand behind their product?

DO NOT BUY THIS REFRIGERATOR

Submitted by alethea2019 - 1/16/2019

We bought this refrigerator in November 2015 - 1 week after it was installed, the ice machine completely failed. It required 5-6 service calls to finally get it working. Customer service was awful. The service guy suggested we try to get them to just replace the appliance bc there was obviously an issue but Whirpool refused. According to them, once they drop it off you're stuck with it no matter how good/bad it is. Refrigerators should last more than 3 years. We have had mediocre ice supply over the last three years and now the ice machine is not keeping ice frozen and we have a complete fail in the freezer. So we have to decide whether to repair this "lemon" of a refrigerator or shell out more for a new one - obviously different brand. I called Whirlpool and they were as caring as always, essentially saying it was not their problem and nothing they could do.

Submitted by Misty J - 1/14/2019

We bought this refrigerator 4 years ago, LOVED IT. Roomy, organized, easy to clean. I thought just perfect until a leak in the Freon system. BAD NEWS. Fortunately we bought an extended warranty. After 3-4 weeks without a fridg, they paid us, minus the warranty amount. Tons of food lost. Guess we bought a lemon. Whirlpool use to has good appliances???

Beautiful refrigerator but beware icemaker issue

Submitted by Dbrown - 1/1/2019

I purchased this refrigerator 3 years ago because of all the nice features and have really enjoyed it. However, the icemaker stopped working and the repairman said it requires a fan to be installed to stop it from freezing up. Whirlpool knows of this defect so why should I have to pay $500 for parts and labor?

Submitted by Jonathan74 - 12/25/2018

It's been for a few months now but when an ice maker works it makes plenty of noise. The biggest imperfection with this refrigerator is when you try to get some water with a tiny cup, you need to aim otherwise a good chance one will spill the water, since it's not calibrated exactly for small glasses

Submitted by LuLu1960 - 12/13/2018

Bought this exact brand 3 years ago. Love the capacity, looks and ambient lighting, however, am NOT happy with the ice maker. It hasn't worked properly since we purchased, but struggled along. It would work fine, but stop for no reason. Now, it will NOT produce any ice at all. So so,disappointed. Will not buy Whirlpool again.

Junk

Submitted by VinG - 10/25/2018

I've owned this model for just over 2 years. I am now having a problem where I need to unplug the refrigerator every month or so to defrost it. Currently the refrigerator portion is about 56 degrees so I guess I need to do it again. Hopefully when I call whirlpool corporation tomorrow they can help me out as I spent over $5,000 on a full appliance suite.

Love The Fridge

Submitted by DTFL - 9/26/2018

We have had this refrigerator for a year now and love it. It is the most efficient and organized refrigerator that we have ever had. It helps save on spoiled food waste because we always know where things are. The only drawback is the ice maker and it's capacity. The ice maker and ice bin is in the left door and it is very small which allowed for more interior storage capacity for other foods. If you are a family that consistently uses a lot of ice you will experience problems with it keeping up to meet demand. Our children like to make smoothies every morning so they use up a blender full of ice. The ice maker just cannot make ice fast enough, nor is the bin large enough to handle this. When the kids are gone and it's just my wife and I we don't have much of a problem. But when they are here and the weekend comes around and it's time for beverages (we live in the south), we always end up having to buy a bag of ice or two as we are frequently run out. If you have a family that frequently uses ice and this is going to be your only fridge/freezer, I would consider a model with a larger ice maker capacity. Beyond this, I highly recommend this fridge. I have read others complaining about the noise level. From our experience, we have not found it to be noisy at all. To be fair, my hearing isn't what it used to be but the only time I ever notice any sound is when the open door alarm sounds off or the ice maker dumps a fresh batch (which is very quiet).

This Refrigerator has been a nightmare

Submitted by Jansky - 9/21/2018

I have had this Refrigerator less than two years and have had it serviced multiple times, and it looks like it will need it again. There is standing water/ice underneath the middle drawer all the time. If you don't wipe the water out, it will freeze and then the door won't shut. I shouldn't have these issues with a 3000.00 appliance.

Terrible ice maker

Submitted by Chasbo1946 - 9/17/2018

We bought our refrigerator almost 5 years ago. At 4 years the ice maker stopped working. Have had repair service on going for over 7 months and still no ice. We love the refrig other than the ice machine.

Very disappointed

Submitted by Apar328i - 9/12/2018

We have owned this refrigerator for less than two years and the ice maker is not working. The ice in the door is also melting and leaking water inside the refrigerator and then down the front. I would figure for something that costs north of $3000 it would at least last for 10 years before things like this start happening.

Terrible fridge, nonstop problems...

Submitted by Angry_jackie - 8/30/2018

Brought this fridge 2.5 years ago and love it to start with. 3 months ago, the freezer will not freeze. Call a technician and he claims it needs to replace controller board to begin and will costs $400 with no guarantee it works. Now, it's the ice-maker leaks. Also, the fridge starting to make loud noise when it runs. Cmon! It's a $3000 dollar fridge and last lesser than 3 years?! Used to think Whirlpool has the best brand and now we avoid it at all costs. No more Whirlpool in the house!

Disappointed

Submitted by Hugz88 - 8/27/2018

Bought this fridge about 3 mths ago on Clearance from Best Buy. It won't keep my items cool (freezer works fine.) I thought it was because it was refurbished but it looks like I'm not the only one with that issue. DON'T BUY. Very spacious but doesn't do what its supposed to. Milk spoils every week.

Ice dispenser extremely noisy

Submitted by duke1983 - 8/8/2018

We bought this from Lowes. The first one lost all the lighting after 24 hours so Lowes replaced it. I'm going from a Samsung (the worst appliance I have ever owned). Every appliance I have is Whirlpool so I decided on this fridge. My biggest complaint is that the ice dispenser is EXTREMELY NOISY. Also, I think it's when it fills with water, it is also noisy. My husband says the dispenser could wake the dead. I called Whirlpool and was told they could send a repair man but if nothing is wrong I have to pay a service call. I'm very disappointed in Whirlpool. If I didn't think something were wrong I wouldn't have called. After spending close to $3000 for a fridge I can't afford a service call! My daughter bought a GE at the same time and it doesn't have theses awful loud noises. What has happened to customer service these days?!!

Coils Freeze

Submitted by Dangit12 - 8/7/2018

We have owned this refrigerator about 2 years. The coils are freezing up, the fridge / freezer does not keep items cold or frozen. We researched the problem online, and this refrigerator has awful reviews on consumerreports.org for the exact same problem in the same time frame. https://www.consumerreports.org/products/french-door-refrigerator/whirlpool-wrx988sibm-246831/overview/ Wish we went with a different fridge, and would not recommend to a friend.

Like the features, wish it worked!

Submitted by Stephen0717 - 6/23/2018

Bought new in July 2017. First day of operation there was water dripping from the top of the interior. Service tech thought it had a faulty water valve so he changed it. Still leaked so he came back out and discovered a HOLE in the water line going to the ice maker. Should have found that when they assembled the thing. Now it's 11 months old and the fridge and the freezer will not cool at all. Two service calls so far and it's STILL not working. We have not had a fridge for two weeks now! Tech has no idea what is wrong with it, he said he plans to keep throwing parts at it until it works while we have to keep buying ice to try to save what food we can. Not a happy customer here.

Worst Fridge I have owned, but looks good

Submitted by Jeff16 - 6/16/2018

I bought this fridge to match the other appliances in my new home. The fridge is a good looking fridge with some nice features. However, the door ice and water dispenser has worked on again off again since I bought it. Now this feature does not work. The ice maker also stopped working. Water filter said it needed to be replaced after 1 month. I've had numerous fridges, and never had any issues. Performance I would rate a 1 Star, but due to looks and a couple of cool features I give it 2 stars.

Brand new and broke

Submitted by Disappointed Dan - 5/17/2018

I bought this fridge earlier this month brand new....and it's broke. The refrigerator door sensor wouldn't stay closed so no ice is being made. Called a tech to come out and he said I needed new hinges...they are on order. Had another whirlpool gold refrigerator before this one. The compressor went out in a year. Is whirlpool going downhill???

Disappointing -Broke Down- After 2 Years

Submitted by MRRMK - 5/1/2018

I bought this refrigerator in January of 2016 it died in March of 2018. I bought it because it was made in the USA and I try to buy american made products. It worked well for about 2 years and then developed a major problem. I thought I purchased it with a three year service contract but did not. In any event, the freezer stopped working (i.e would not get cold). I paid more than $2,400.00 when new, plus tax and delivery. I was told repairs would be in the range of $1,000.00. I decided to cut my losses. I contacted Whirlpool. They would not sent out one of their technicians without a charge of almost $200.00. They did offer to provide a replacement unit with a discount off the current price of over $3,000.00 but really only two years life out of an expensive refrigerator, is very poor reliability. Whirlopool sold me another one (same) with a three year service contact, so the new unit will be covered for four years. When it was all said and done I paid more than $2,300.00 for the new unit. Almost what I paid two years ago. I think Whirlpool should have done better, they should have stepped up to the plate. I am not saying I should have gotten the replacement for free but I think they should have done better on the price. I wanted to buy American, I just hope that the replacement has a reasonable life. Maybe I was stupid to get the same one but the features are nice and it seems to be well made. I will keep you posted. But really Whirlpool you should be ashamed of yourself. Nobody is perfect but you should really take better care of your customers. Loyalty used to be a two way street. PS. ALL THE PERSONEL I DEALT WITH IN CUSTOMER SERVICE WERE PLEASANT, NICE AND HELPFUL . BUT LIKE ANY EMPLOYEE THEY ONLY HAVE A CERTAIN LEVEL OF AUTHOIRTY., THEY DID WHAT THEY COULD. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT WHIRLPOOL HIRES GOOD CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVES. BUT WHIRLPOOL AS A CORPORATION SHOULD TRY AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS MORE EQUITABLY. IF THEY KNOW THEIR UNITS ARE PRONE TO PROBLEMS INCREASE THE PRICE BY THE UNIT BY $100 OR $200 AND PROVIDE A FOUR YEAR WARRANTY OR FIVE YEAR WARRANTY.

I can't believe that I found a refrigerator I love

Submitted by fridgebuyer2 - 3/19/2018

I'm an A-type and researched refrigerators extensively before choosing this one. We were replacing a very expensive one that died an ugly and premature death. Not only did I read hundreds of reviews, I went to multiple appliance stores to evaluate the features. I have a background in human factors design and was thoroughly annoyed that so many of the most popular and expensive refrigerators have ridiculously tiny drawers that only pull out to 30% of their depth and cheap-o glides, poor lighting, freezers sections that are not sufficiently compartmentalized to allow the contents to be viewable, etc. I wasn't sure I'd like the pull out drawer on this refrigerator and wasn't sure how I'd use it but it was the best option at Costco so I took the leap. The pull out drawer is now my favorite feature. I store my produce in there and it is a dream to be able see and access all of it. My kids love the little snack section. The interior refrigerator drawers are spacious, pull out far enough to make them functional and glide like a dream. I store canned beer and sparkling water in the small center drawer. The refrigerator is well-lit and for the first time I feel as though I can see everything. I knew that I wanted three sections in the freezer so that I could see everything and I'm glad I held out for that wish because I really can access everything quite easily AND I can store a whole lot more in the freezer than I could in my old side-by-side. Yes, I'll agree that the water dispenser is not perfect--the lever is awkwardly placed--but I usually use the autofill option. I've had the refrigerator for over 6 months now and I STILL can be heard saying out loud that I love this refrigerator. Time will tell if it's reliable. I'm crossing my fingers because this one is perfect for me in every other way. My husband thinks it can be a little loud at times but we all agree that it's not obnoxious and I'm willing to overlook that flaw because so many other things are so well done.
